Chapter Twenty-Three
âDo you think itâs inappropriate to have erotic daydreams about your boss when heâs talking to you?â
âNo. I think itâs inappropriate to have them and do nothing about it.â
âI can hardly jump him in the middle of the shop, Bec.â
âOf course not, thereâs a back room isnât there?
Samantha laughed. âAnd what do we do about the customers?â
âPut a back-in-five-minutes sign on the door.â
âGee, thanks, but I was kinda hoping it might last longer than five minutes.â
Bec laughed this time. âNever underestimate the complete and total sexual high you can get from a quickie. I think theyâre underrated.â
âForget it Bec. Iâm not going there when I know the relationship is going to go nowhere. Anyway, itâs just my eggs talking. Theyâre being pushy. I donât really want Nick.â
âCareful Sam, I can hear your nose growing.â
âOkay, I do butâ¦itâs not as easy as all that. Weâre friends. I like our friendship. If we cross that line for good then itâll never be the same again. Weâve already kissed and Iâm pretty sure I may have propositioned him under the influence of vodka recently and thereâs this increasingly weird vibe between us. And Ray should be stuffing up right about now so it wonât be long until Iâm gone, and heâs going to Kathmandu and will be gone soon too.â
âOkay, but couldnât you both just have a bit of fun together in the meantime?â
âBut what if I miss the guy who wants to have babies with me because Iâm too busy having fun with Nick?â
âThen maybe it wasnât meant to be.â
âOh god, Bec. You sound like Nick now. Iâm getting a little sick of the whole itâll-happen-when-itâs-meant-to-happen philosophy.â
âMaybe he has a point?â
âOr maybe heâs a guy whoâs worked out the perfect way to avoid any kind of commitment or necessity to work at a relationship. I think heâs just lazy and will probably end up old and alone.â
âAlone doesnât have to be bad, Sam. I have four kids, five if you count their father who can be extraordinarily childlike from time to time, and alone sounds divine.â
âWell I donât want to do alone, Bec. I want a baby.â
âHey, youâll always have us. Which reminds me, I popped a pressie in the mail for you from Jess. She made you something in art class.â
âOhh, how sweet.â
âWell donât get too excited, she is only five remember.â
âIâll love it whatever it is.â
âOkay. But donât say I didnât warn you.â
Samantha hurried to work. She was running late. Sheâd slept through her alarm because sheâd been in the middle of a particularly horny dream about Nick. Did women have wet dreams? Because if they did sheâd just had her first!
She put her hand on the doorknob and took a deep breath as re-runs of her dream played in her head. Stop it, Samantha! She had to work with him today. She would be totally useless if she let her dream replace reality.
He was her friend, not a pirate. She was a plain Jane nobody, not a beautiful wealthy princess.
